Lots of my friends ask me what it’s like to work on a set. And while each set can be different because of the crew, type of project, weather conditions, or the director, the general answer is this:
It’s a lot of fun. It’s a lot of “hurry and wait”. It’s productive. And… It’s yummy!
Let me explain…
The fun part is obvious… it’s when you are working in front of the camera and doing what makes you happy. There is a thrill in being in front of the camera, and more so when you are bringing a character to life on film.
The “hurry and wait” is because… well, most of your day is spent waiting for the crew to be ready for your shot. It’s not uncommon to show up on set at 7AM and not actually start working until 2PM. So it’s a whole lot of waiting…
The productive part is…. because you know there is a lot of waiting to be done…. you prepare for this… so you bring a good book, magazines, bills or any other items on your to-do list. You would be surprised how many things you can get done on set!
And lastly… the yummy part. Reference the food truck picture above. The food truck, or craft services, as it’s called in the biz, is one of the highlights of working on set. They make some of the best dishes, even better than many restaurants, and it’s all done in a truck! The quality and variety of the dishes surpass any buffet, and the owners of these trucks are often chefs who make deliciously creative dishes. And, as you can see from the picture above, when its chow time, everyone rushes to get in line!
